What is marketing?

Marketing is a long and continual process to determine which markets are worth entering and which customers are worth targeting, and then coordinating with other sides of the business to promote and sell a product or service to these segments. Marketing is not only about finding out what the needs of the customer are and satisfying them; the most profitable businesses predict what consumers don't even realise they need, until they're shown.

Marketing careers

There are many disciplines within marketing, using the term broadly. It is a function within every business, no matter how large or small, so there are always opportunities. One can become a market researcher, a PR account executive, a sales executive, an online affiliate, among other roles. Starting salaries are close to £17k, depending on location; however, for senior positions that amount can raise substantially to £40k on average, and still further to £70k. Candidates benefit from some education in business; a degree is especially useful for setting the foundations for understanding. Most importantly, though, those in marketing need to be resourceful and understand how people respond to products and the promotion behind them.
